Summary

WP Total Post Sync is a developer friendly plugin for syncing massive amounts of WordPress posts from any WordPress site with the REST API enabled to another WordPress site.

Powerful transformation tools and revision friendly sync makes WP Total Post Sync a powerful tool for dev sites or live installs.

With a few simple tweaks, it can sync content, for use with indexing or widgets such as related or recommended content, but use the original remote post link.

In many uses cases, it can replace RSS feeds with a more flexible sync tool capable of being run using WP Cron.

Background

In 2016, after 7 years of using wonky, barely thought out CMS’s, our client finally moved back to WordPress.

To keep my Newsletter Generator working smoothly, I had to rebuild the Sanity to WordPress Sync to sync from WordPress.

This was an exciting opportunity to expand this this from a single purpose to general use, where one could sync content from any WordPress site and could support filters, so you can modify content, or sync only some fields, as well as actions that can be triggered only on sync, edit and resync of WordPress posts.

Use Cases

Syncing Content from a staging site to a live site

When developing improves on a site that’s already live, such as adding a new post type with content, editors and developers often have issues with how to migrate content, do you compare databases, export posts, enter data twice, etc. With WP Total Post Sync, you can have a one way sync, with changes to content that updates posts even as new content is being published regularly.

Syncing content from a live site to a dev site or dev site

As a one way sync, the destination doesn’t have to be a public website.

Keeping staging sites is sync is often a pain and we result in duplicate work of entering content when building out new post types or making changes to post types. WP Total Post Sync has the ability to alter everything from the title to the post type, giving developers the ability to copy content from one site to another

Syncing headlines and a paragraph or two of copy with a link back to the original site, without having to

Most public WordPress sites have a public REST API endpoint. With a few filters, WP Total Post Sync would allow a developer to sync content from a site, even if they don’t own it, to create related posts or publicly shared links.

Syncing from multiple sites is a work-in-progress.

Scheduling backups of posts to a local site

WP Total Post Sync can be run via CRON so you could use it to sync content to a local or private site if your webhost (WP Engine) disabled revisions. As each sync with edits is an edit, it creates a revision log on the backup destination.
